👤 EXCLUSIVE: Adenike Lucas and Danjuma Aliyu, DENISAURUS News
Ibrahim Mustafa Magu, a man whose suspicious promotion was exclusively reported on this website, is finally off to study at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS.
Despite his privately crying and wailing at the recently concluded United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session that took place in New York, the man described by the Department of State Service, DSS, as a “liability to the corruption fight,” was told by the Nigerian President that the course is “important” for his career progression and he must attend it.
Mr Magu, 54, a “perennial offender” has done much to prevent the move to the Senior Executive Course in Kuru, Jos, located in Plateau State of Nigeria.
DENISAURUS News, the first to also reveal the suspension of Nigeria’s Financial Intelligence Unit from Egmont, has provided some of the details of how Mr Magu has seriously tried to evade a course which is a compulsory part of his promotion.
The Commissioner of Police, whose promotion was exclusively reported by DENISAURUS News in March 2018, before it was announced by the Police Service Commission, PSC, persuaded the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo to tamper with the course list, hence, his absence from the course earlier in the year.

Reporters of this paper also learned from senior police officers at the commission that the anti-graft boss tried to persuade the former Inspector General of Police not to announce his promotion, with the hope that if it is not printed in the police signal, he would dodge the course.

Professor Osinbajo, an ally of Mr Magu was the most vocal voice in the fight to keep the anti-graft boss at the Commission. Despite his rejection by the 8th Senate under Sen Bukola Saraki, the arm of government tipped with screening and confirming nominees from the executive, Professor Osinbajo continued to support Mr Magu.
He was able to prevent his move to NIPSS in February of this year, even at the objection of many staff members. At the time, this paper was informed by those familiar about the situation that the issue had made staff demoralised and Musliu Smith, the Police Service Commisison (PSC) chair was upset to discover that Mr Magu had defied orders given for him to attend the mandatory course.
Mr Magu, who has failed to give a detailed account on recoveries and assets, has faced even more set back because the PSC Chair Alhaji Smith remained resolute about his attendance of the course.
The PCS chairman, made it known to close allies that he would not take rubbish, and would rather resign than work with such insubordinate actors.
Alhaji Smith, who under his leadership has filed a case against the Nigeria Police Force over a recruitment exercise seen as an “affront on the Constitution and a waste of national resources,” recently complained to the President, saying why “would any one refuse to attend a course meant to advance their career.”
At UNGA which happened early this month, President Buhari seems to favour the opinion of the PSC chairman.
Eye witnesses present at the meeting with the anti-graft boss and President Buhari, said Mr Magu, a native of Borno state, approached the 76-year-old President at a side event, where he began to cry and beg that he did not want to go to NIPSS.
“I have done so well there (EFCC),” Mr Magu was heard to have said.
But, the President who was not convinced by what insiders described as “crocodile tears,” stated that Mr Magu needs “to go on the course.” He said “it is very important for your career progression.”
Following Alhaji Smith’s recent complaint, insiders confided with this paper to say that interviews have began with potential replacement for Mr Magu.
Mr Magu, DENISAURUS News paper understand will begin the course in November this year. Staff members are already jubilating.
DENISAURUS News’s request to Mr Magu’s EFCC spokesperson for comment went unanswered.
In fact, a candidate screened by the secret police has been cleared by them. The candidate looks in a favourable position to take over as soon as Mr Magu is sent off to the course.
This paper was informed that the removal of Mr Magu from the Economics and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, will cause more problem for Professor Osinbajo, who is currently facing stiff challenges over allegation of corruption and mismanagement of some funds released during the 2019 elections.
For instance, loyalist of the president are peeved that the Vice President is eyeing the presidency in 2023. They have also become less trusting of him.
According to a top government official, the cabal are suspicious of Professor Osinbajo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Although they did not really trust him before, but now it’s clear their suspicions have grown even more because of what they discovered about him recently.
A source said the cabal believed a year ago, Professor Osinbajo moved to remove one of the leading members of the cabal from office.
The government official whose name we have hidden to protect his identity, said the VP deliberately removed the erstwhile Director General of the Secret Service, because he had written an indicting report against Mr Magu of EFCC.
They also believed that when the VP had an air accident where his helicopter crash landed in Kabba at Kogi State, he deceived them that the money he was transporting got burnt. They believe the VP kept the money for himself.
Even those who were once allies of the VP are also turning against him too.
A top ruling party chieftain, who brought the VP into politics is also not happy. The APC stalwart who also wants to be president in the next four years, is not happy his protégé has shafted him because of his aspiration.
People familiar with the situation told this paper that the chieftain discovered that his protégé has been building a war chest against his very own ambition for 2023.
The party chieftain who resides in Lagos has now decided to bring down all the structures and political giants the VP built in preparation for the next election.
A source said that everyone that is associated with the VP and those who got elected through his influence need to be very worried now as they will all fall with their benefactor very soon.
