Ibrahim Mustafa Magu, has once again taken a devastating step so as to punish his core operatives.
Mr Magu, the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was recently implored by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, NSIWC, to improve the welfare and conditions of staff members at the commission by increasing their meager salary.
NSIWC, a government body, established by Act 99 of 1993 to deal with issues relating to salaries and wages of Nigerian workers, recommended and approved for the pay of core staff to be increased by a whooping 85 percent.
But, EFCC workers, who have voiced out to President Muhammadu Buhari in the past, exclusively told DENISAURUS News that their boss used his veto power as the Acting Chair of the EFCC, to order a “discard and cancellation of the entire increments.”
Mr Know It All
Sources close to the EFCC boss, say that he is in the habit of ignoring wise and professional advice of management, owing to the fact that the anti-graft boss believes that he alone knows it all.
Mr Magu went as far as ordering the EFCC’s Department of Account to forget about such benefit to staff members, arguing that why should they be paid better than his colleagues seconded from the Nigeria Police Force NPF.
In addition, staff members who refuse to give their name for fear of reprisal, say Mr Magu’s action goes to prove that the anti-graft boss does not see himself as a stakeholder at the agency.
They accused Mr Magu of being insincere about the fight against corruption and questioned his source of wealth.
“If the Commission is refusing to pay well, how is Mr Magu able to afford his luxurious lifestyle.
“Or is he forgetting that he is also a staffer? Does this mean that the DSS report of him using his lackeys for self- aggrandisement is true?, one employee asked.”
Speaking to DENISAURUS News, the junior staff grumbled about the reluctance of the Executive of the Commission decision not to pay them a decent wage, stating that it could also be seen as an allowance for people to go on a rampage for kickbacks out of desperation.
Explaining himself, he said: “Mr Magu is trying to punish us by rejecting the NSICW’s recommendation on our pay.
“If we don’t get good pay, desperation would make people go on a rampage,” another operative said.
The operative added: “Imagine, because of children school fees, some people might begin to collect kickbacks from high profile suspects.”
In their view, Mr Magu’s refusal to heed the advice of the Wage Commission was tantamount to “robbery,” and they argued that it was a revelation of the corrupt officer’s “parochial and sordid” intent on their welfare and motivation.
Mr Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC spokesperson is away on holiday. His replacement could not be reached for comment.
Rejected, But Refusing To Go
Mr Magu’s nomination was rejected by lawmakers last year, following an indicting intelligence report by the Department of State Security Services, DSS.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police blames his core staff for not getting confirmed and resents them for it.

Staff, who were accused of whistle-blowing were sent home on suspension in 2015. Many of them still remain at home and are not being paid.
The 53-year-old self-acclaimed anti-graft tsar, is not only attacking workers pay and conditions of service, he has also denied core operatives several promotions, as stated in two separate petition sent to the National Assembly and President Muhammadu Buhari.
Asked if Mr Magu’s unfair treatment towards his subordinates is affecting the agency’s ability to deliver the Federal Government’s promise to kill corruption, staff said yes.
Citing the powerful maxim, “he who comes to equity must come with clean hands,” they say Borno born Mr Magu, who claims to have studied Accounting, “can’t kill corruption,” as he himself is “very corrupt as proved by the DSS report.”
The Commission has been unable to successfully prosecute any Political Exposed Person, PEP, during Mr Magu’s tenure.
Because of the EFCC boss, Nigeria has been suspended from a world financial intelligence server.
In spite of his inadequacies and failures, Mr Magu has been able to keep his job, thanks to his prominent Godfather and a Top Government official, who is said to be guided by a Chieftain of the ruling party.
Those worried about Mr Magu’s nonchalant towards the fight against corruption believe he should be removed.
Staff members have in the last one year been lamenting over the victimisation, bullying and corruption that has thrived under the leadership of Mr Magu.
However, they say President Buhari seems to believe those who do not mean well for him, thereby disbelieving the genuine and honest appointees and aides that are demanding for a replacement for Mr Magu.
EFCC workers further relayed to DENISAURUS News that they will “not be deterred, instead will continue to expose our boss, who had perpetually deceived the entire nation, using media sensation to allude that any exposé or criticism is ‘corruption fighting back’.”
