Staff members of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have made their displeasure about their “corrupt” boss known to the President of the Senate.
The aggrieved workers have long exposed the crimes of Ibrahim Mustafa Magu to reporters from this newspaper.
Their allegation were later confirmed in an indicting report written by the Department of State Services, DSS against Mr Magu.
Consequently, Mr Magu’s nomination to become the fourth substantive chair of the anti-graft agency was rejected twice by lawmakers at the Senate.
Corrupt Magu Rejected By NASS
Despite, his rejection, Mr Magu who was described as a “corrupt officer” and a “liability to the corruption fight” remains in office.
A petition dated 6th November and signed by Abba Mai-Deribe, staff accused the Ag. Chairman of engaging “in what seems to be misappropriation of funds, illegal virement and extra budgetary spending without the approval of the National Assembly.”
“Note that the National Assembly do approve all government agencies’ spending and appropriation. The Ag. Chairman has been misappropriation the commission’s money and diverting same contrary to the Appropriation Act,” the petitioner went on to add.
The employees also accused Mr Magu of embezzling money by deliberately choosing to train new recruit at Nigeria Defence Academy “contrary to the Commission’s standing regulation.”
Core staff are being denied promotion and deliberately under developed and “reduced to nothing.”
In this instance, the petition states that “Mr Bashir Bello, a fellow chartered accountant in the accounting department, who has been due for promotion to Directorate Level is being victimised and reduced to nothing. Because the Ag. Chairman does not want any core staff to develop.”
They also refer to the unfair disengagement of core and professional staff who have served the Commission diligently, but have now been replaced with “incompetent ones.
“See the case of former head of Human Resource Unit, former head of General Services, former head of SCUML, former Commandant of Academy and former head of SARU.
“These are pioneer staff of the Commission, who have been trained with so much resource. These people can be called as witnesses to testify this case,” the eight page petition states.
READ THE PETITIONÂ
DENISAURUS News has contacted the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwajaren for comment.
It was recently reported that Mr Magu was carrying out illegal recruitment of staff. He is also said to be spending above the budgetary limits. “The Ag. Chairman spends as much as fifteen million naira as security votes, which is far above the maximum five million naira allocated.”
Months Of InvestigationÂ
This is not the first time DENISAURUS News is reporting about the corrupt antics of the Borno Police Officer. In May, Adenike Lucas, exclusively reported that due to Mr Magu’s sabottage and deliberate leak of crucial information, Nigeria’s Financial Intelligence Unit had been suspended by a crucial financial server based in Toronto.
The EFCC boss claimed that “Nothing was disconnected” and Miss Lucas was a “paid” agent.
A spokesperson for the Attorney- General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has since confirmed in media interviews that Mr Magu was a saboteur whose action caused the suspension.
The height of Mr Magu’s incompetence is alarming. His inability to perform might be because due to his poor education some staff have said.
“The Ag. Chairman has also been accused of not possessing genuine educational qualification and the education certificates presented by the Ag. Chairman Magu may be questionable based on the inconsistency with the schools he claimed to have attended. On the EFCC website, the Ag. Chairman claimed to have graduated from Accountancy department of University of Maiduguri; meanwhile, during the screening confirmation hearing at the floor of the Senate, the Ag. Chairman claimed to have graduated from Accountancy department at Ahmadu Bello Univeristy, Zaria,” the petition details.
This newspaper had previous reported on the qualification scam of the self-acclaimed anti-corruption tsar.
Indeed, on the EFCC website, Mr Magu was stated to have attended Uni Maiduguri, but at his screening he claimed to have attended ABU. When this story was published, Mr Magu hurriedly edited his biography on the Commission’s online portal – but a snip of Mr Magu’s old profile can be found here
The Editor of DENISAURUS News, who was privy to some of the complaint against Mr Magu, and has published them over the past year, continues to offer her support to staff members.
Even after blowing the whistle on several of the atrocities perpetuated by their boss, one of which led to the suspension of NFIU from the Egmont financial server, core staff believe their allegations were being ignored.
Female staff who have fallen victim to Mr Magu’s retrogressive policies are now ready to speak out publicly against the injustice they have suffered.
Hafsat Bakare, Shade Popoola, Fatimah Bukar, Tundun Modundola, Amina Sambo, Ngozi Moses-Sarumi, Nai’ma Bo, Aisha Laria Musa, Binta Rano, are among the names of those “ready to testify as witness in this investigation.”
