Ryan Gibbons Charged With Murder Of Michael Samwell

A 29-year-old named as Ryan Gibbons has been charged with the murder of ex Royal naval officer, Michael Samwell.

Mr Samwell, 35, died after trying to stop the theft of his Audi S3 from his home in Manchester, in the early hours of Sunday (April 23).

Greater Manchester Police said Mr Samwell and his wife, heard a “loud bang” outside his home and he went out to investigate it.

Shortly afterwards, shouting was heard from the rear of the house, where Mr Samwell’s body was found with serious injuries.

He was taken to hospital but he died a short time later.

On Monday (April 24), a 21- year old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and burglary.

The man along with a 20-year-old and 15-year-old school boy have been bailed pending further enquiry.

Mr Gibbons, accused of murder, burglary and Aggravated Vehicle Taking, appeared at the Manchester and Salford Magistrate Court today.

The case has been referred to the Crown Court. He will appear before the Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday, May 2.
