By Christian Smith

Police in Manchester have started a murder investigation after a man was run over and killed by thieves who stole his car.

Police say, a 35-year-old man, Michael Samwell, had tried to stop his black Audi S3 from being stolen from his home in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester.

Mr Samwell, a former Royal Navy officer, reportedly heard a “loud bang” outside his home and he went out to investigate it.

Shortly afterwards, Police say, shouting was heard from the rear of the house, where Mr Samwell’s body was found with serious injuries in the early hours of this morning.

He was taken to hospital but he died a short time later.

The officer leading the investigation said there was a search to catch those responsible for Mr Samwell’s death.

Det Supt Jonathan Chadwick from Greater Manchester police’s serious crime division said: “This is the murder of an innocent man who has merely sought to protect his property from criminals.”

“We will not stop until we have found the person responsible for this dreadful crime.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 9908 alternatively call 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
