Governor Obaseki then had to leave the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC to join the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in order to fight for a second term.
A former PDP candidate Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who Edo’s former Governor, Mr Oshiomohole said “was not good,” was selected as APC candidate.

Mr Ize-Iyamu when he challenged Governor Obaseki for the position in 2016, was revealed by Mr Oshiomole, as someone who “poured acid” in the private part of a fellow student and was rusticated for the act.
Governor Obaseki says that “Oshiomhole has no respect for Benin. Somebody you said was not good yesterday, you went to bring him to rule over us? “Somebody that did not go school is asking for the Certificate of somebody that went to University.
He said “even if we (Benin people) are fools, should you tell it to our face?”
