Yahaya Bello, the current Governor of Kogi state has said he plans to put himself forward for re-election in November.
Governor Bello, who wants to be re-elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, explained that his second term in office was backed by God.
“I would like to inform the good people of the state, the APC family and supporters from the state, the Local Government Areas (LGAs) down to the wards and polling units, as well as various stakeholders, opinion molders, families and friends of my interest to run for a second term in office as the Executive Governor of the state.
“I have sought the blessing of the Almighty God and our good people; I will have to contest for the second term so that we can build on our modest achievements so far in the state by taking it to the next level.”
Governor Bello has struggled to pay civil servant their salaries. In 2018, a popular lawmaker from Kogi quit the ruling APC to join the opposition Peoples Democratic Party over a long running battle he had with the Governor.

The opposition is relying on the failure of the Governor in the state. A spokesperson of the PDP believes the election slated by The Independent National Electoral Commission is theirs for the taking.
Kola Ologbondiyan, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP said: “As we all know, our people have gone through pains, pangs, acute poverty, hunger, dehumanization, brutalization, job losses, untimely deaths, suicide and all sorts of anguish as a result of the misrule of the incumbent APC government.

“The people of Kogi state are therefore looking up to the PDP for rescue and we cannot afford to fail them. We must therefore not allow anything to demoralize us as the winning streaks, which our party displayed in Imo, Adamawa, Bauchi, Osun among others, will be repeated in Kogi state by the grace of Almighty God.
“In this race, we must also bear in mind that we have the support of the people. Kogi state has always been home to the PDP notwithstanding the temporary setback of the APC. We must, therefore, prepare ourselves, stand with the people and salvage our dear state from the pangs of misrule. Our people yearn to move forward and we must give them that leverage which they earnestly seek.”
