The All Progressives Congress, APC has succeeded in Ogun state, where Ibikunle Amosun insisted on handing over to a member of the opposition party.
Governor Amosun refused to support Dapo Abiodun, the Gubernatorial candidate of his party. Instead the outgoing Governor, who has served two terms, gave huge support to Adekunle Akinlade, the candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement.
Hours after wining the Senatorial seat on the platform of the APC, Governor Amosun embarked on a massive campaign rally for Mr Akinlade, causing the executive members of the party to remove him temporarily from their ranks.
At the poll, the Governor and his preferred candidate lost out to Prince Abiodun, who received a margin of up to 20, 000 votes.
The APM candidate, with the logo of a Cassava scored 222, 153 votes, despite the Governors support and alleged attempt to destabilise several polling unit on Saturday’s election.
Gboyega Isiaka of the African Democratic Congress received 110, 422 votes, while Buruji Kashamu, a serving Senator in one of the key battle ground in the state received 70,290 votes.
Senator Kashamu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had a long court running with another member of his party over the Guber ticket. Eventually, the Federal High Court in Abeokuta dismissed the challenge made by Oladipupo Adebutu.
The Senator who defeated Prince Abiodun in the 2015 Ogun East Senatorial elections, has already conceded defeat since the announcement of the Governorship results was made by Idowu Olayinka, the Returning Officer on Monday (March 11) morning.
He said, “Yes, it was a struggle against arbitrariness, injustice and the overbearing attitude of some of our political actors. We put in our best. But, from the outcome of the election, our best was not good enough.
“It was clear to all that while our opponents were on the field, we spent most of the time going in and out of court because some persons thought they could use their wealth to ride roughshod over us. We thank God that they did not succeed. We fought like men and contested the election against all odds.”
