Dimeji Bankole, a former House of Representatives speaker, is the latest prominent politician to join the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Mr Bankole, who recently got married to Aisha Shinkafi, the daughter of Kebbi State governor, joined the party at his ward – 10, Iporo – Sodeke unit, which is located in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the state.
The politician, who had run as a governorship candidate in 2019, on the platform of the Action Democratic Party, ADP, but lost to Dapo Abiodun, the candidate of the APC, is said to have been welcomed by President Muhammadu Buhari, a week ago.
Mr Bankole when addressing his supporters said: “today is not for a long speech. The only thing I will say is that I have now joined APC. What is left is to continue praying on the step we have taken. It will be well by God’s grace.”
The APC is currently running a membership recruitment drive, in an attempt to increase its database – in preparation for the 2023 elections.
New members, DENISAURUS News understands will be able to participate in primaries to select candidates for the elections.
President Buhari is serving his second term, meaning the APC would have to field someone else as it Presidential candidate.
There are rumours that the newly joined Mr Bankole 51, may secure enough support to run as the next Governor of Ogun State or could receive support for a higher office.
If Mr Bankole is supported for the position of Governor in 2023, it could pitch him against Prince Abiodun, who was first elected in 2019 and has plans for a second term.
