The DSS has threatened to sanction any network provider that refuses to cooperate with it, in furtherance of its fight to ensure the security of the nation.
A Head of Data Management of a Telecommunications Company ( name withheld) said they received a letter from the DSS on the 1st of June,2016 containing names of prominent Nigerians, fo7rmer Presidents and governors, stating they were under surveillance and investigation, for acts that are capable of breaching peace.
Some were alleged to be behind IPOB, Niger Delta Avengers, Boko Haram, crises in the National Assembly, and divisions in the APC.
He said ” Initially we declined the request, and the DSS showed us a telephone conversation between an APC leader and an EFCC official, very indicting one at that, which they got through the cooperation of another telecommunications company. So we had no choice but to cooperate with them, even though we consider this as very unethical of our business.
Reacting to Govs Wike and Fayose’s recorded conversation, he said,
” unfortunately there’s nothing anyone in Gov. Wike’s government can do about the recording of his conversations.
No device can successfully stop his calls from being recorded.
The governor can secure his end, but how about the end of the persons he calls, or that call him? His voice can be amplified, and be recorded from the other end.
The governor has been declared a security threat by the DSS, we have the letter, and have been instructed to monitor and record all his conversations.
His lines and lines of his regular conversationists are all bugged ”
Our correspondent spoke to a security expert, who described the actions of the DSS as shameful and rather unfortunate.
He said ” recording can be done from your end, the network provider and the receiver’s end.
You can control your end, and perhaps the receiver’s end. But you cannot control that of the Network Provider. Therefore, the Governors must resort to face to face conversation; on important and sensitive issues.
