President Muhammadu Buhari has announced his intention to run in the 2019 presidential election.
The Governor of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai, tweeted President Buhari’s intention to run a few seconds ago.
“PMB has just announced to APC NEC his intention to run for a second term of office. Alhamdulillah,” the tweet from @elrufai reads.
The announcement comes as members of the All Progressives Congress are holding a meeting on the tenure elongation of the party chairman, John Oyegun.
Governor El-Rufai’s tweet was later confirmed by the Presidency. If successful, President Buhari who will be jetting off to London today, should be 81 when he leaves office in 2023.
During the 2015 election, President Buhari promised to tackle unemployment, corruption and also solve the problem of insurgency.
However, during his reign, Boko Haram, a terrorist group has kidnapped more school girls, despite a swap deal and amnesty from the government.
A recent corruption index showed that the President has failed to deliver his promise to “kill corruption.”
Transparency International, TI Nigeria scored 27/100 and ranked 148 out of 180 countries in 2017.
By contrast, when Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was leading, Nigeria scored 26/100 and was ranked 136.
The index which ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption was a massive blow to President Buhari who has kept a “corrupt” man, Ibrahim Mustafa Magu, in charge of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC despite an indicting report written against him by the Secret Police.
Based on his poor performance and failure to deliver on promises, former President Olusegun Obasanjo advised that the 76-year-old ex Military Head of state should not seek office in 2019.
This advise was echoed by another former Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida.
General Babangida said PMB as he is often referred to, must retire from politics when his first term comes to an end in May 2019.
So far, there has been mixed feelings from the public about President Buhari’s decision to seek a second term in office.
@edozie01 thinks it is an “opportunity to retire Buhari through the ballot box come 2019!”
Another excited twitter user, @Ddeliverer1 welcomed the news, stating that both “the APC and Buhari would be sent packing.”
