IGP: Officer Who Shot Woman Dead Near Her Home Will Be Dealt With

A police officer who fatally shot a woman to death near her own home in Katampe Extension, Abuja has been arrested.

The officer whose identity is yet to be revealed, was arrested for shooting Anita Akapson on the night of October 13, 2018.

Mrs Akapson, 31, who was working at the National Emergency Management Agency, had only just returned from the United Kingdom to live in Nigeria less than a year ago, before her untimely death.

Friends of Miss Akapson who described her as a “cheerful and hardworking soul,” say that she did nothing wrong when the police officer shot her dead.

“Anita Akapson was gunned down last night by policemen that were dragging with her at Maitama, Abuja …SHE DID NOTHING WRONG,” @ChrisHaze_ wrote on twitter. 

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation confirmed that the deceased was a niece of Esther Nenadi Usman, a former Senator and finance minister, who was one of those listed on President Muhammadu Buhari’s travel ban.

Mr Fani-Kayode said: “a few hours after the Presidency announced the ban, her (Senator Nenadi Usman’s) niece was trailed, targeted, intercepted and shot dead by 4 policemen in the middle of the night in Abuja!”

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has since ordered for the arrest of the policemen involved in the death of the 31-year-old UK returnee.

In a statement seen by DENISAURUS News, Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood said the “IGP has ordered the detention and investigation of Policemen involved in the incident that led to the death of Miss Anita Akapson.

“The Inspector General of Police has directed the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to immediately detain and personally carry out a thorough investigation of policemen involved in the incident that resulted in the death of Miss Anita Akapson at Katampe Extension, Abuja on the night of Saturday, 13th October, 2018; and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The IGP deeply commiserate with the family of the deceased and hereby assure them that justice will be done in the matter. The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command is already in touch with the family as directed by the Inspector General of Police.

“The public will be informed of the outcome of investigations into the incident.”
