The mother of a woman who was murdered by a “trigger-happy” police officer in Abuja has called for an independent investigation into the death of her 31-year-old daughter.
DENISAURUS News understands that Anita Akapson, 31, was shot dead on the night of October 13, 2018.
Friends of Miss Akapson who described her as a “cheerful and hardworking soul,” say that she did nothing wrong when the police officer shot her dead.
“Anita Akapson was gunned down last night by policemen that were dragging with her at Maitama, Abuja …SHE DID NOTHING WRONG,” @ChrisHaze_ wrote on twitter.

Esther Nenadi-Usman, the mother of the deceased say she received a call at about 11pm by an anonymous caller who informed her that Miss Akapson “was in Gwarinpa District Hospital.”
Mrs Nenadi- Usman, a former Senator and Finance Minister believes her 31-year-old daughter was trailed and targeted by the officer who shot her.
Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation had also noted that the deceased, who had just moved back from the United Kingdom to Nigeria not up to a year ago, was “trailed, targeted, intercepted and shot dead by 4 policemen in the middle of the night in Abuja!,”a few hours after the Presidency announced Senator Nenadi-Usman was one of the 50 people on its banned from leaving the country.
In a letter seen by DENISAURUS News, a lawyer for the former lawmaker said “on the arrival of our clients at the hospital, Miss Anita had died from the gunshot injuries.”
Kayode Ajulo said: “Several eye witnesses (names withheld) detailed to our clients how the deceased was trailed, targeted, intercepted, her vehicle brushed, blocked and shot at close range by a police officer while she was sitting in her vehicle (an Honda Accord Salon) at Katampe District, Abuja.
“The circumstances of the trailing, tracking and gruesome murder of the deceased who had a strong affinity with Senator Nenadi Usman, a member of the leading opposition political party in Nigeria, and who is presently facing continuous prosecutions from the states, unleashed with inattentive executive sanctions, calls for thorough and comprehensive investigation.”

He adds: “We, therefore, based on the foregoing, urge you to use your good offices to cause a comprehensive investigation of the killing and surrounding circumstances without further delay to unravel the intent and the culprits behind this mindless act.
“Sir, you will agree with us that the right to life is fundamental and non-negotiable. Nobody regardless of how highly placed should be allowed to take another person’s life and yet live freely in our society.”
In the letter dated 15 October, 2018, Mrs Nenandi-Usman’s counsel promises to “TAKE “use the instrumentality of the law to seek justice in the death of Miss Anita Akapson if investigations are not timeously and thoroughly conducted.”
