An All Progressive Congress APC Chieftain, and one time Minister of State for Petroleum during late Head of State General Sani Abacha, Umaru A. Dembo has lambasted those spreading false rumours of death against President Muhammadu Buhari.
The former gubernatorial candidate of defunct Congress For Progressive Change, CPC in Kaduna State, made this during an interaction with our reporter.
Alhaji Dembo was worried over what he called unethical behaviour among some Nigerians, who tend to see their leaders as enemies instead of praying for them, so the leaders could be touched to do good towards the electorates.
The close ally of PMB dating back to the days of military rule, and when the President ventured into Politics in 2003, says “I was so flabbergasted, when certain uncultured and unprofessional journalistic foreign online media began the hoax.”
He further said “I recalled when some of us, before joining politics and government, we had engaged in a more professional journalism. Where, instead of publishing false news, we rather not report any. Because, a good name is better than silver and gold.”
However, he says ” Today, journalism is been turned into a computer-like job. Where self-acclaimed journalist, just garbage in and garbage out. All in the name of either the money they would get, or to have more readers of their junk news.”
The former minister advised that those engaged in online news media, should endeavour to verify their source and the genuineness and authenticity of what is been transmitted to them for publication. As he averred that, this is what is called Investigative Journalism”.
The onetime member of the New Nigeria Newspaper, also warned that those who engage in the wrong side of journalism, should be ready to bare consequences, as not all false news published by them, would they get away with. He believes the perpetrators would run helter-skelter by the time they see “Ghost PMB” return from medical vacation any moment from now.
He urged patriotic Nigerians to pray for President Buhari, as he revealed that so far, PMB is a leader whom he has seen so concerned about the plight of masses in the country.
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki confirmed to his 597K followers that he had spoken to the President in the past 12 hours and he was “good spirits.”
Aide to the Speaker of the House, Rinsola Abiola @Bint_Moshood tweeted to say that
President @MBuhari called Speaker @YakubDogara yesterday, Wednesday 8th February around 9:20 p.m. They spoke for over 5 minutes.
The 73-year-old had to extend his holiday in order to receive the results of a test he had done while on holiday.
