Usman Alkali, the new Inspector General of Police, IGP, has authorised the removal of senior police officers attached to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, days after a DENISAURUS News editorial saying that force members are not needed at the agency.

In the editorial published on 17 April 2021, the editor of this paper, Adenike Lucas stated that “Police colleagues seconded from the Nigerian Police Force, NPF, to the Commission, enjoyed massive privileges like promotion and supplemented wages, but operatives did not really get the same.”

Miss Lucas, a long time campaigner against injustice at the EFCC, said that “Operatives who saw this, believed police officer seconded to the EFCC, would have double allegiance. It was not good for the agency.

“Some had then argued that the police be withdrawn from the Commission.”

DENISAURUS News having given itself as a news medium in reporting all the injustice committed against plain clothe operatives, noted that it is essential that the new Chairman of the Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa succeed to show that police are not needed for the success of the war against graft.

There has been a long list of Police officers heading the EFCC. From the pioneer, Nuhu Ribadu, to his successor Farida Waziri and then Ibrahim Lamorde and Mr Magu, they were all police officers. Albeit, Mrs Waziri, the only female to have chaired the anti-graft was retired, when she assumed her position at the agency.

“I write to extend the warmest regards of the Inspector General of Police and to inform the Chairman that the Inspector General of Police has directed the withdrawal of all Senior Police Officers from the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) and above attached to your agency.

“This decision is informed by the current operational requirements of the Force. You are accordingly requested to kindly direct the immediate release of the concerned Officers who are to collectively report to the undersigned on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at 1000hrs for further instructions,”

It was wrongly assumed that only the Police could lead, but the EFCC Act states otherwise. DENISAURUS News had exclusively posted on February 27, that the police would be withdrawn from the anti-graft agency and operatives from the Department of State Security, DSS, would replace them.
