The National Executive Council of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, has decided to withdraw from the Presidential elections scheduled to take place on February 16, DENISAURUS News has gathered.
The party which had both Donald Duke and Jerry Gana vying for its Presidential ticket, said it was now going to throw its weight behind the incumbent President.
At an ongoing meeting in Abuja, executive members who reached a resolution together to support President Buhari’s re-election bid, said they did so because”we cannot campaign, we cannot do anything because of the protracted legal issue and we feel that it is impeccable to technically withdraw from the presidential election.
“We are therefore adopting the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari, as our preferred candidate for the Feb. 16 election.”
Another Presidential candidate Obiageli Ezekwesili also stepped down her campaign last week.
Mrs Ezekwesli’s party the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN decided to support President Buhari following her decision to throw in the towel.
The endorsement of President Buhari by a factional National Secretary of the SDP, Shehu Gabam, comes less than ten days before the elections.
Mr Duke, a former Governor of Cross Rivers is yet to react to the endorsement given to President Buhari by his party.
