Senate Confirms Ex IGP As Chairman Of Police Service Commission

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the nomination of Musiliu Smith as chairman of the Police Service Commission, PSC.

Mr Smith a former Inspector General of Police and six others were confirmed as chairman and members of the PSC, after a report by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs was considered.

The confirmed members of the PSC includes: AIG Lawal Bawa (rtd) and Justice Clara Ogunbiyi (rtd) and Naa’jatu Bala Muhammad as full time commissioners.

Others are Dr. Nkemka Jombo-Ofo, Rommy Mom and Braimah Austin as ordinary members.

Hajiya Muhammed, the first female Senator from Kano, had previously rejected an appointment from the President in 2016.

The appointment as Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, was the first time anyone refused to serve in President Buhari’s government.

The Senate President Bukola Saraki, while congratulating the new members of the Commission, commended “the quality of the nominees that have been brought forward by Mr. President.”

He said: “This gives us hope and encouragement that all our efforts to see that this critical aspect of our security architecture receives the necessary reform.”

“We wish all the members the best of luck in their new role. Before this nomination, they have had a lot of expectations from Nigerians. This is why we ensured that we fast-tracked this nomination.”
