President Muhammadu Buhari has caused an upset by suggesting that Nigerian youths are lazy individuals who “sit and do nothing” but hope to get everything for free.
The President, who appeared on a panel with world leaders at the Commonwealth Business Forum in London on Wednesday, said that : “More than 60 per cent of the population is below 30, a lot of them haven’t been to school and they are claiming that Nigeria is an oil producing country, therefore, they should sit and do nothing, and get housing, healthcare, education free.”
President Buhari once said in an interview that Nigerians have a reputation for criminality which made it hard for them to be accepted abroad.
“Some Nigerians claim is that life is too difficult back home, but they have also made it difficult for Europeans and Americans to accept them because of the number of Nigerians in prisons all over the world accused of drug trafficking or human trafficking,” he told The Telegraph in February 2016.
“I don’t think Nigerians have anybody to blame. They can remain at home, where their services are required to rebuild the country.”
Sources within the Presidency told DENISAURUS News that the President’s most recent speech was taken out of context.
The Presidential Spokesperson, Femi Adesina is expected to release a statement with more details shortly.
But, critics have lambasted President Buhari, for his illogical comments.
Reno Omokri, when reacting to President Buhari’s recent gaffe, praised young people for their resilience and ability to thrive in a country like Nigeria
He said President Buhari’s statement were a better description of the President’s own attitude.
President Buhari “sits and does nothing at Aso Rock,” he wrote.
“He gets free housing at the Presidential Villa. He spends 103 days in London and we pay for it! Joblessness makes him talk anyhow!”
Mr Omokri, a Special Adviser to the previous President said : “Nigerian youths created Nollywood from scratch without government help. Seventy-seven percent of black doctors in America are Nigerians, mostly youths who were frustrated out of Nigeria due to inept leadership of the likes of Buhari. In his life, can Buhari name one thing he has run successfully?
“Between Nigerian youths and Buhari, who sits and does nothing? What rubbish from a president who lied that rats chased him from his office so he could work at home. A lazy president who can’t supervise his IGP to know where he is calls youths lazy. You will hear from them in 2019.
“It is statements like Buhari’s comments that Nigerian youths are lazy that make me value my white beard. Since I am not a youth, I am not lazy according to Buhari’s logic.”
Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, who hopes to unseat President Buhari in 2019, said “I will never refer to Nigeria’s youth as people who sit and do nothing.
“They are hardworking. I should know, I have thousands of youths working for me all over the country who have been the backbone to our success.”
