Former England and Chelsea defender John Terry has signed a one-year contract with Aston Villa.
Tony Xia, chairman of the Championship side, confirmed the signing of the former England and Chelsea captain on whatsapp chat, which was broadcasted on the clubs twitter account, @AVFCOfficial.
The 36-year-old whose contract at Stamford Bridge was not renewed this summer, is set to earn around £60,000-a-week. He said he was “delighted to join Aston Villa.”
In a statement released on Monday, he said: “It’s a club I have admired from afar for many years – there are fantastic facilities at Bodymoor Heath, Villa Park is one of the finest stadiums in the country and there’s a good group of players here, with an experienced and successful manager in Steve Bruce.”
Centre-back Terry, who made 713 appearances – 578 as captain, and won five league titles with Chelsea, added: “I can’t wait to get started now and look to help the squad achieve something special this season.”
