The cause of the fire at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Akure, the capital of Ondo, has been revealed.

The fire which destroyed more than 5,000 smart card readers days before the October 10 Governorship election in the state, was caused by electrical fault from the air conditioner, the Commissioner of Police in the state has said.

Bolaji Salami, who became the Commissioner of Police in Ondo in 2019, revealed that “the outcome of an investigation carried out by federal fire service showed that electrical surge from the air conditioners inside the containers housing the card readers caused the fire outbreak.”
