Danjuma Goje, senator representing Gombe central, has withdrawn from the Senate President leadership race.Â
DENISAURUS News believes the 66-year-old former Governor of Gombe has decided to throw his support behind Senator Lawan, a fellow lawmaker from the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Senator Lawan, who represents Yobe North Constituency of Yobe State, is the current Majority leader. His candidature is supported by senior members of the APC, including President Muhammadu Buhari.
The decision to support Senator Lawan came after Senator Goje meet with President Buhari in Abuja today.
“In spite of all the support I have among my colleagues in the senate, I have decided to in deference to the loyalty I have for his excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari and in deference to the loyalty I have for my party, the APC in the interest of our party and the development of this country, in other to assist Mr. President to deliver his promises, I have decided to respect his wish by not declaring to contest this senate presidency,” Senator Goje said after meeting up with the President.
The leadership contest is now between Senator Lawan, and Ali Ndume, a Senator from Borno.
Senator Ndume, a member of the APC, has refused to back down and insists he has enough numbers to make it as the President of the Ninth Senate.
