President Muhammadu Buhari issued a statement to congratulate the Nigerian Super Eagle after they defeated Iceland in their World Cup match in Russia today.Â
The Super Eagles received a call from the President hours before their game against Croatia on Saturday. But, they lost that game.
Soccer fans where however more joyful as Gernot Rohr’s team scored two goals inorder to defeat their Nordic opponent in Volgograd.
The Nigerian team had earlier meet with the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki who took a delegation to the Russian Parliament this week.
When Senator Saraki saw the football team, he spoke words of encouragement to them before they hit the stadium grounds.
Ahmed Musa, 25, delivered both goals for Nigeria. The Leicester City forward scored the first goal in the 49 minutes and the second in the 75 minute.
President Buhari hopes they will perform the same skills against Argentina next week.
He said: “I am confident that if our players believe in themselves, they can qualify out of their difficult group and even go very far in the tournament,” adding that “with determination, nothing is impossible.”
