The Member of Parliament for South Staffordshire Gavin Williamson, has been appointed as the new Defence Secretary after Sir Michael Fallon’s resignation following allegations of sexual harassment.

Mr Williamson, nicknamed “baby-faced assassin” was previously Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury (Chief Whip).

Downing Street confirmed the appointment, adding that Mr Williamson’s deputy Julian Smith will take up the role of Chief Whip. A former minister Esther McVey, was named as Mr Smith’s deputy.

Mr Williamson, a father-of-two who entered Parliament in 2010 has said, he is “honoured and excited” by the promotion.
