The President-elect of Gambia, Adama Barrow has posted a tweet to say he is alive and well after rumours of his death surfaced online.
CBN Television, Banjul had earlier reported that Mr Barrow was murdered by an unknown assailants who overpowered his security guards, leaving two dead and six others injured from gunshots.
In a tweet from his official handle, @adama_barrow, dismissed on-going news of his assassination, and assured those that were worried that he “is alive and well.”
The Gambian President-elect, who received 43.3% of the vote to defeat President Yahaya Jammeh in the December election, wrote on the social media four hours ago, saying: “We would like to inform you that the President-elect is alive and well. #Gambia.”
President Jammeh, the longest serving ruler of the small western African country, who had initially conceded defeat but later decided to annul the elections, has vowed to remain in office even after his tenure expires on January 19.
The British Broadcasting Corporation reported that President Jammeh has received the backing of the head of the Gambian’ army.
Gen. Ousman Badjie, wrote a letter stating the “unflinching loyalty and support of the Gambian Armed Forces” to Mr Jammeh.
