Hundred of school children were inside a building in Ita Faaji when it collapsed this morning.
Some of the school children were rescued, but others did not make it out alive from the building which was said to have been marked for demolition.
Witnesses made it known that though the “distressed” building on Lagos Island was marked for destruction since last year, it was not because someone cleaned up the markings.
The report of the collapse has now been confirmed by the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode who visited the site to condone with families and friends of the victims.
Rescue operative believes up to five children have died. The number of casualties is expected to rise.
The Representative-elect for Lagos Island Constituency II, Prince (Barrister) Kayode Akiolu expressed tremendous sadness about the “avoidable crash.”
In a statement seen by DENISAURUS News, Governor Ambode said: “I am deeply saddened by the loss of precious lives in the collapse of a building in Lagos Island today.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost loved ones in this unfortunate incident.
“Our response team is doing everything possible to rescue more people and provide medical attention to survivors.”
