David Cameron thought President Muhammadu Buhari was going to “turn around and go home” after a secret recording showed him telling the Queen, Nigeria was fantastically corrupt.
The former British Prime Minister, who was speaking at Transperancy International’s Anti-Corruption Lecture, said he was “rather embarrassed,” after the incident in 2016.
“I got back to Downing Street and immediately called the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, who was in his aeroplane, shortly to land. I was worried he might turn around and go home.”
To his surprise, the former leader of the Conservative party told the audience that President Muhammadu Buhari, who was to attend the Anti-corruption summit hosted in London didn’t return home, he instead said: “David, I heard what you said you’re absolutely right – that’s why I am coming.”
The next day, President Buhari signed up to the Open Government Partnership.
