George Osborne has been appointed the new editor of the London Evening Standard newspaper.

Evgeny Lebedev, the owner of the paper, made the announcement on Twitter on Friday, saying he was “thrilled to announce the new editor of the @EveningStandard is @George_Osborne.”

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, was one of the first to congratulate Mr Osborne on his new job.
But Mr Osborne did not get the nod from everyone. The former chancellor, who takes over from Sarah Sands on May 2, received heavily criticism from members of his party over his decision to take the edit the evening standard.
A few Conservative MP have also called for Mr Osborne to step down as the Member for Tatton.
They say he would no longer be able to represent his constituents effectively while working as an editor of a daily paper.
