The new leader of the largest nationalist party in Northern Ireland has said that a referendum on leaving the United Kingdom and joining the Republic of Ireland should be called as “as soon as possible.”
Michelle O’Neill’s announcement comes a day after the leader of the Scottish National Party; Nicola Sturgeon called for a second independence vote.
Both calls for referendum comes at a time when the Prime Minister, Theresa May is to begin the process to trigger the process to leave the UK.
Ms O’Neill who replaced Martin McGuinness as Sinn Féin’s leader in the Northern Ireland Assembly in January of this year, made the announcement to hold a referendum to leave the UK while speaking at Stormont today.
While making her argument, she told reporters in Belfast that “Brexit will be a disaster for the economy, and a disaster for the people of Ireland.”
Hence, she said: “A referendum on Irish unity has to happen as soon as possible.”
