Downing Street rejects Calls To Cancel Trump’s Visit Despite Over 1m Signatures

By Christian Smith

More than 1 million people have signed an online petition to prevent a planned UK visit by the US President, Donald Trump.

President Trump plans to visit the UK sometime this year, but many say he should not be granted audience with the Queen over his recent clampdown on immigrants in the US.

On Friday, Mr Trump, the 45th President of the United States, signed an executive order which bans immigration from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen for 120 days.

The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau has offered temporary visas to travellers effected by the ban.

Mr Trump, who is planning a state visit to the UK, has been lambasted by many, including the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

A petition created by Graham Guest on Sunday states that: “Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US Government, but he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen.”

Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn has urged the Prime Minister, Theresa May, to postpone the visit.

Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the row.

The UK Government responds to all petitions that get more than 10,000 signatures. Mr Guest’s petition has gone over the requirement, as such, members of parliament will discuss the debate tomorrow.

As at 15:14pm, today,  the petition has gathered 1,311,096 signatories since it was launched since the weekend; however, No 10 has already rejected the calls to cancel Mr Trump’s invitation, as a state visit remains “substantially in the national interest.”

In a subsequent statement, Downing Street said: “To be clear, the Prime Minister extended an invitation on behalf of the Queen – and she was very happy to do so. The USA is one of this country’s closest allies, and we look forward to hosting the President later this year.”
