The President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos has received the award for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize in recognition for his effort to end the civil war in the south-American country.

President Santos received the prestigious award for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than five decade long civil war to an end.

Other notable recipients of the award includes, US first black President, Barack Obama.

The President lead a negotiation over a peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group, this summer.

Before the cease fire was negotiated this summer, more than 220,000- many said to be civilians- had been killed.

The Columbian people rejected the accord proposed to the Farc, however, President Santos reworked the deal.

Nobel authorities in Oslo made the award, despite the failure of the Colombian people to ratify a peace deal.

They “sought to encourage” the president by going ahead to award him with the prize.
