The President of Mauritius is to step down from her role soon, following allegations of corruption.
Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, 58, is accused of using a bank card provided by a charity to make personal purchases worth tens of thousands of dollars.
The 58-year-old, who is Africa’s only female head of state, will be resigning before Parliament resumes sitting next month.
Today, the Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth said: “The president of the republic told me that she would resign from office and we agreed on the date of her departure”
“The interest of the country comes first, and I am proud of Mauritius’s image as a model of living democracy in the world.”
